Epilogue -- Changing Times

Several weeks later, somewhere deep in the Green Mountain territory Green Mountain lived up to its name, particularly in the spring, Davina mused as she walked along the forest trail. Though it was dark, the open night sky provided plenty of light for her to see by. The loam squished between her bare toes and she took an almost girlish delight in getting them dirty. Her intimate, prolonged contact with the demon had left deep scars on her soul. They would heal in time, she knew. Loving life’s little pleasures went a long way to help with that.

But today’s walk had another purpose. Cypress had sent her a message asking to meet. It had been weeks since she’d endured that nightmare in Taggert’s Bend. She’d sensed his presence in her mind several times since then, always with hesitation as if he wasn’t sure he had a right to be there. He was wise to be cautious. Resentment at what his stubbornness had forced her to endure lingered long after the physical pain had healed.

Now, after spending time at home and soaking up the love of her coven, she felt more like her old self. Love for her brother won over the anger, and so she had agreed to his request. She wondered whether Cypress was expecting the Prima or his sister.

His letter had been vague on that point as well as the reasons behind the meeting.

Cypress was waiting for her outside the ruins of their family home. She almost didn’t recognize him at first. A black leather vest pulled tight across his muscular torso.

A pair of dark blue jeans encased his butt and thighs. There wasn’t even a leather pouch for protection around his neck to mark him as a witch. Most startling of all was how young he looked, as if the weight of the world had fallen from his shoulders. “Hello, Willow.”

Ahh, that answered that question. Using the name given to her at birth rather than the one Mother Nature had bestowed upon her when she’d become Prima.

“Brother,” she replied, inclining her head. “You wished to see me?”

He scuffed his leather boot across the broken flagstones leading up to the unhinged front door. “How’ve you been?”

She smiled at his obvious discomfort. Such a change from the arrogant, self-possessed man he’d been a few weeks ago. But then again, love did that to a person. In this case, she thought it was for the better. “I suspect you know more about what I’ve been through than I do.”

He took her hand and squeezed it. “I do. Which is partly why…”

“Go on.”

“This is harder than I thought it would be.” He took a deep breath, then reached into a hidden pocket on the inside of his vest to withdraw his wand. With his gaze locked on her, he deliberately broke it in half and let the pieces drop to the ground. “I’m done, Willow.”

“Why?” She didn’t really need to hear the answer, but she suspected that her brother had to say it.
